Why heart surgery in India for Nigerians makes sense

Nigeria has skilled cardiologists and a growing number of cardiac units. The problem most families describe to us is not skill. It is access: long waits for a theatre date, open-heart surgery that is only available in a few centres, and costs that are hard to pin down before admission.

India solves three of those problems at once.

1. Volume. The large heart hospitals in Delhi NCR carry out bypass and valve operations every single day. Surgeons who do this work weekly, not monthly, are better at avoiding complications and better at handling them when they happen.

2. A price you know before you fly. You get a written, itemised estimate from the hospital before you book a ticket. Families can plan, borrow or raise funds against a real number instead of a guess.

3. Speed. Once the surgeon has reviewed your reports and you arrive, surgery is usually scheduled within a few days. For someone with blocked arteries or a failing valve, those weeks matter.

There is also a practical reason. English is the working language of Indian hospitals, so there is no interpreter between you and your doctor. Nigerian patients are a familiar sight in Delhi hospitals, and most of the large centres run an international patient desk that deals with Nigerian passports, visas and payments every week.

Heart surgery cost in India for Nigerians

The table below shows starting prices at our partner hospitals, converted at the Central Bank of Nigeria’s official rate of about ₦1,333 to the dollar (early October 2026). The naira moves often, so treat the naira column as a guide and the dollar price as the figure the hospital will quote.

ProcedureStarting cost (USD)Approx. in nairaHospital stay
Angioplasty and stenting$3,800₦5.1 million2 to 3 days
Bypass surgery (CABG)$4,500₦6.0 million7 to 10 days
ASD or VSD closure$5,500₦7.3 million3 to 7 days
Heart valve replacement$7,500₦10.0 million7 to 10 days
MitraClip$25,000₦33.3 million3 to 5 days
TAVI / TAVR$38,000₦50.7 million4 to 6 days

What the price includes

  • The surgeon’s and anaesthetist’s fees
  • Your room for the planned number of days, including ICU time after surgery
  • Standard medicines and consumables used during the stay
  • Routine tests during admission

What changes the final bill

  • Implants. The type of stent or valve (mechanical or tissue, Indian or imported) can move the price by several hundred to a few thousand dollars.
  • Room category. A private room costs more than a shared or economy room.
  • Extra days. If recovery takes longer than planned, each extra day in hospital is added.
  • Your condition. Diabetes, kidney problems or a previous heart operation can mean more tests and a longer stay.

Remember to budget for flights, a guest house or serviced apartment near the hospital for about two weeks after discharge, and daily meals. These depend on the area, the season and how long you stay, so ask us for a living-cost estimate alongside the hospital quote. Indian e-Medical visa for Nigerians

Nigerian passport holders can apply for India’s e-Medical visa online, without visiting the embassy in Abuja or the consulate in Lagos. The application is made on the official Indian e-Visa website, and the approval (called the ETA) arrives by email.

You will usually need:

  • A passport valid for at least six months from your arrival date, with two blank pages
  • A recent passport photo on a white background
  • A scan of your passport’s photo page
  • The hospital invitation letter, which we arrange for you once you choose a hospital
  • Your medical reports showing why treatment is needed

One family member can travel with you on an e-Medical Attendant visa, linked to your application. Apply for both at the same time, and do it at least a week before your planned flight so there is time to fix any problem with the photo or documents.

We have a step-by-step guide for this exact process: India medical visa from Nigeria. If you would rather someone handled the paperwork with you, our medical visa assistance team prepares the invitation letter and checks your forms before you submit.

Travelling from Lagos or Abuja to India

There is no direct flight between Nigeria and India at present. Most patients fly from Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos or Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport in Abuja with one stop, usually in Addis Ababa, Dubai or Doha, and land at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi. Check the latest routes and fares with your travel agent, because schedules change through the year.

A few things make the trip easier for a heart patient:

  • Tell the airline about the condition. Some airlines ask for a fit-to-fly note from your cardiologist before you board. Ask when you book.
  • Book an aisle seat so you can stand and walk during the long legs.
  • Carry all medicines in your hand luggage, with the prescriptions, and enough for the whole trip plus a week.
  • Pack every report in one folder: echo, angiogram CD or video, ECG, blood tests and any previous discharge summary.
  • Bring US dollars or a card that works abroad. Hospitals accept international cards and wire transfers, and payment always goes to the hospital itself.

When you land in Delhi, our coordinator meets you at the airport and takes you to your accommodation or straight to the hospital, depending on the plan agreed with your doctor.

Step by step: from your first report to flying home

Here is how heart surgery in India for Nigerians works when you come through us. Most families go from first message to admission in two to four weeks, and much of that time is the visa.

  1. Send your reports. Share your latest echocardiogram, angiogram, ECG and blood tests on WhatsApp or through our form. Phone photos are fine as long as the text is readable.
  2. Get a free written opinion. A senior cardiac surgeon or cardiologist reviews the reports. Within 48 hours you receive their opinion on what treatment you need. Our online second opinion guide explains what this review covers.
  3. Compare two or three hospitals. You get an itemised estimate from each, so you can weigh price, surgeon and location side by side.
  4. Video call with the surgeon (optional). If you want to speak to the doctor before deciding, we arrange it.
  5. Apply for the visa. We send the hospital invitation letter and help you fill in the e-Medical and attendant visa forms.
  6. Book flights and arrive. Our coordinator meets you at Delhi airport and settles you into your accommodation.
  7. Admission and surgery. The hospital repeats a few tests, confirms the plan and schedules the operation, usually within a few days of arrival.
  8. Recovery and discharge. After discharge you stay near the hospital for follow-up checks before the doctor clears you to fly.
  9. Back in Nigeria. Your discharge summary goes to your local cardiologist, and your Indian doctor stays available for video follow-ups.

How to choose the right hospital and surgeon

The best hospital for you is not always the most famous name. It is the one that does your specific operation often, has the right equipment for your case, and fits your budget. When you compare options, ask these five questions:

  1. How many of this exact procedure does the team do each year? A centre that does bypass surgery daily is a safer choice than one that does it occasionally.
  2. Is the hospital JCI or NABH accredited? Both are quality standards that inspect safety, infection control and patient care.
  3. Is there a 24-hour cardiac ICU and cath lab? If anything changes after surgery, the team must be able to act at any hour.
  4. Who is the operating surgeon, and how many years have they done this work? Ask for the name, not just the hospital.
  5. What exactly does the estimate include? Check the implant brand, the room type and the number of ICU days.

You can browse our list of the best hospitals for cardiac surgery in India and the best cardiac surgeons in India, with their experience and the hospitals they operate in. Our network is anchored in Delhi NCR, which has good one-stop connections from Lagos and Abuja.

For children with a hole in the heart, ask specifically for a paediatric cardiac team. Child heart surgery is a separate speciality, and the best results come from units that treat children every week.

Recovery, flying back to Nigeria and follow-up

Recovery depends on the operation. After an angioplasty, most people are walking the same day or the next and leave hospital within two or three days. After open-heart surgery such as bypass or valve replacement, expect 7 to 10 days in hospital, then about two weeks of gentle walking and rest near the hospital.

When can you fly home? Your surgeon decides, after a check-up and a fit-to-fly assessment. As a rough guide, many angioplasty patients fly within a week, and many open-heart patients fly 10 days to 2 weeks after the operation. Do not book a fixed return date until the doctor has seen how you are healing. A flexible ticket costs a little more but saves a lot of stress.

Before you leave India, make sure you have:

  • The full discharge summary and operation notes
  • A printed list of every medicine, the dose and how long to take it
  • Enough medicine to last until you see your cardiologist in Nigeria
  • The date of your first video follow-up with the Indian team
  • Clear advice on wound care, diet, driving and returning to work

Back home, book an appointment with your local cardiologist within the first two weeks. Share the discharge summary with them. Most medicines prescribed in India, such as blood thinners, statins and blood pressure tablets, are available in Nigerian pharmacies, but ask your Indian doctor to write the generic names as well as the brand names so your pharmacist can match them.

If you want to hear from people who have done this already, our patient success stories are told by families who travelled to India for treatment, in their own words.
