Choosing a Cancer & Oncology specialist in India

Cancer treatment in India is delivered by three overlapping specialists, and knowing which one leads your case helps. A surgical oncologist, trained through MCh in Surgical Oncology, removes tumours and performs staging surgery. A medical oncologist, trained through DM in Medical Oncology, manages chemotherapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy. A radiation oncologist, trained through MD in Radiation Oncology, plans and delivers radiotherapy, often using image-guided or stereotactic techniques for precision. In most cases these three work together through a tumour board rather than one specialist deciding the full treatment plan alone, and which one you speak to first usually depends on whether surgery, systemic treatment or radiation is the immediate next step.

The specialists listed here were selected on qualification in the relevant branch, years in independent practice, the annual volume of cases they handle in their own category, and the hospital and tumour board behind them, since oncology outcomes depend heavily on team coordination as well as individual skill. Several are attached to high volume cancer centres in Delhi NCR where our network is anchored. Send your pathology report and we will tell you which specialist your case actually calls for, with an opinion within 48 hours.

Frequently asked questions

Who is the best oncologist in India?
The useful question is which category your case falls into. A surgical oncologist, a medical oncologist and a radiation oncologist play genuinely different roles, and the strongest name in one is not automatically the strongest in another, nor the right first call for your case. Ask how many cases of your specific cancer type a specialist treats in a year, and ask whether your case goes through a documented tumour board. We match specialists to cases on that basis and will say plainly if the right person sits outside our usual list.
What qualifications should an oncologist in India hold?
DM in Medical Oncology for chemotherapy and systemic treatment, MCh in Surgical Oncology for tumour surgery, and MD in Radiation Oncology for radiotherapy are the recognised superspecialty qualifications in India, each taken after the relevant broader postgraduate degree. Registration with the Medical Council of India or the relevant state council is mandatory. Many senior oncologists also hold fellowships from centres in Europe, the US or Singapore, particularly in immunotherapy and transplant medicine.
Can I get an opinion before I travel?
Yes, and for most cancer cases we recommend it, since the sequence of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation genuinely changes based on stage and biomarker results, and getting that sequence right the first time matters. Send your pathology report, imaging and any treatment already started. A tumour board reviews the case and comes back within 48 hours with a recommended plan and an approximate cost. The opinion is free and commits you to nothing.
Can I speak to the oncologist before booking?
Yes. Once your reports have been reviewed, we arrange a video consultation so you can go through the recommended plan, the drugs or protocol being proposed, expected side effects, and what result is realistic. Interpreters are arranged for Arabic, French and other languages at no extra cost. Many patients take two or three of these calls with different specialists before deciding, which we encourage, particularly for a new diagnosis.
Who looks after me after treatment once I fly home?
Your treating oncologist remains the clinical reference through scheduled teleconsults at the intervals they specify. You leave with a written treatment summary, a surveillance imaging and blood test schedule, medication or oral chemotherapy instructions, and a complete set of records for your local doctor. Where ongoing chemotherapy cycles or maintenance therapy are needed after you return home, that schedule is set out clearly enough for a doctor at home to continue it without guessing what was decided in India.
