The feature that separates transplant hospitals in India is whether they hold their own government transplant licence for the specific organ, since kidney, liver and bone marrow transplant are each licensed separately under Indian law, and a hospital may be authorised for one but not another. Beyond the licence itself, the strongest centres run a dedicated transplant ICU separate from the general ICU, a transplant immunology and HLA typing lab in-house so donor matching is not delayed waiting for outside results, and for liver transplant specifically, a living donor programme with its own hepatobiliary surgical team, since the great majority of transplants for international patients in India use a living donor rather than waiting on a deceased donor list they are not eligible for.
