Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is used to manage chronic, treatment-resistant nerve pain, most often in the back, legs, or arms, in conditions such as failed back surgery syndrome, complex regional pain syndrome, or persistent neuropathic pain that hasn't responded to medication, physical therapy, or injections. A small device implanted under the skin sends mild electrical pulses to the spinal cord, interrupting or modifying pain signals before they reach the brain.

The trial comes first

Before a permanent device is implanted, nearly every patient goes through a trial phase: temporary leads are placed and connected to an external device for several days, so the patient can assess how much relief they get in everyday life. Only if the trial shows meaningful pain relief does the patient proceed to permanent implantation, where a pulse generator and leads are placed under the skin.

What the treatment can and cannot do

Spinal cord stimulation does not cure the underlying cause of the pain; it helps many patients manage and tolerate it significantly better, often reducing reliance on pain medication. Reported outcomes show roughly half to two-thirds of patients get meaningful, lasting relief; for some, the device's effectiveness can also reduce over time for reasons that aren't fully understood. This is why the trial phase matters so much, it gives a real preview of how much a specific patient is likely to benefit before committing to a permanent implant.
