Brain Tumor Surgery in India

Brain tumor surgery removes abnormal tissue growing in or around the brain, which can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). The standard approach is a craniotomy, where a section of the skull is temporarily removed to give the surgeon access, and the tumor is carefully removed while preserving as much healthy brain tissue and function as possible.

What surgery can and cannot do

The surgical goal depends on the tumor's location and how close it sits to critical brain structures. When a tumor is in an accessible area, complete removal is possible. When it lies near structures controlling speech, movement or vision, only partial removal may be safe, done to relieve pressure and reduce the volume that later needs radiation or chemotherapy. Neurosurgeons use tools like neuronavigation and, in some cases, an awake craniotomy, where the patient is kept conscious for parts of the surgery, to map and protect function in real time while operating close to these areas.

Part of a broader treatment plan

Depending on the tumor type and grade, surgery may be followed by radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or both, particularly for malignant tumors or when complete removal was not possible. A neuro-oncology team reviews pathology results after surgery to recommend the right next step.
