Dr Ambrish Mithal

Dr. Ambrish Mithal is the Chairman and Head of Endocrinology and Diabetes at Max Healthcare, Saket, New Delhi, and is widely regarded as one of India's most distinguished endocrinologists and a leading authority in endocrinology and diabetology. He is a recipient of the Padma Bhushan, one of India's highest civilian honors, in recognition of his contributions to the field.

He completed his MBBS from GSVM Medical College, Kanpur University, in 1980, followed by his DM in Endocrinology from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, in 1987 — notably, he was the first person to receive a DM in Endocrinology from AIIMS. He went on to complete a Fogarty Fellowship at Harvard Medical School (1993–94).

Dr. Mithal's illustrious career spans leadership roles at premier institutions. He served as a faculty member in Endocrinology at Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI), Lucknow (1988–1998), followed by a role as Senior Consultant at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi (1998–2009), and then as Chairman of the Division of Endocrinology and Diabetes at Medanta – The Medicity (2009–2019), before joining Max Healthcare in December 2019.

He is internationally recognized for his contributions to bone and mineral research, diabetes management, and metabolic disorders, and his research interests include diabetes and heart disease, new therapies for diabetes, vitamin D nutrition in Indians, and prevention of osteoporotic fractures. He has been nominated to the Governing Council of the National Health Authority, the apex body overseeing India's population health coverage initiatives.
