About Dr Arvinder Singh Soin
Dr Arvinder Singh Soin is Chairman of the Institute of Liver Transplantation and Regenerative Medicine at Medanta – The Medicity, Gurugram, where he leads India's largest and one of the world's most successful liver transplant programs. He and his team are renowned for a 95% success rate, performing 25 to 30 successful transplants every month, and his career total of more than 2,500 liver transplants is the highest in the country.
Dr Soin completed his MBBS and MS at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, spending 11 years there specializing in liver and gastrointestinal surgery. He went on to obtain FRCS qualifications from both the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow and Edinburgh in the UK, and trained further as Registrar in Transplant Surgery at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, and as an SHO in Transplant Surgery in Birmingham.
He holds several landmark firsts in Indian liver transplantation, including the first successful cadaveric liver transplant in India (1998), the first successful live donor left lobe liver transplant in India (1999), and the first successful live donor right lobe liver transplant in India (2000). He established and led India's first liver transplant unit at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi, in 1998, before later founding Medanta's Institute of Liver Transplantation and Regenerative Medicine.
Dr Soin's expertise spans complex liver, gallbladder and bile duct surgery, hepatocellular carcinoma, portal hypertension and choledochal cyst management. He also directs the liver transplantation programme at Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital, Mumbai. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2010 for his pioneering contributions to liver transplantation in India, and also received the R.D. Birla Outstanding Clinician of the Year Award the same year.
