Dr Vivek Vij

Dr Vivek Vij is Chairman of Liver Transplant and Hepato-Biliary Sciences at Fortis Hospital, Noida, and across the Fortis group of hospitals. He is a pioneering liver transplant surgeon credited with developing living donor liver transplant surgery in India and standardizing safety protocols to achieve a 100% donor safety profile since the field's inception in the country.

He is the first surgeon from the Indian subcontinent to publish a series on laparoscopic donor hepatectomy in the journal Liver Transplantation. He founded Liver Transplantation and Hepatobiliary Sciences within the Fortis group, launching a highly successful liver transplant programme first at its Noida centre and later extending it to Mohali.

Dr Vij and his team have a cumulative experience of more than 2,500 liver transplants, the majority performed at Fortis Hospital, Noida, with a record 97% patient success rate and 100% donor safety rate. He holds the credit for the lowest biliary complication rate in living donor liver transplantation worldwide, at under 6%.

He completed his MBBS, MS and DNB, and holds MRCS from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He completed a Roche Preceptorship at the University of Alabama, Birmingham, USA, and was honoured with a special award at the International Liver Transplant Society (ILTS) meeting in Chicago in 2015. He has more than 50 national and international publications and presentations on liver surgery and transplantation, and runs a fellowship programme training young surgeons and paramedical staff at Fortis.
