MitraClip is a transcatheter, or catheter-based, procedure used to treat mitral regurgitation, a condition where the mitral valve does not close properly and lets blood leak backward into the heart. Recovery is markedly faster because the chest is never opened. It is a repair option, not a replacement, so it is most effective for specific patterns of valve leakage rather than every type of mitral valve disease.

Imaging and precision placement

The procedure is guided by live X-ray and transoesophageal echocardiography, which lets the interventional cardiologist see the valve leaflets in real time and confirm the clip is positioned correctly before it is released. One or more clips may be placed in the same sitting depending on how much the leak needs to be reduced, which is one of the factors that moves the final cost within the quoted range.
