Dr Akshay Tiwari

Dr Akshay Tiwari is a Senior Orthopedic Oncologist with over 20 years of experience, practicing at Apollo Hospitals and Apollo Athenaa Women's Cancer Centre in Delhi. He specializes in musculoskeletal oncology and comprehensive cancer care for bone and soft tissue tumours.

His expertise includes limb-sparing surgery for bone and soft tissue sarcomas, reconstructive orthopedic surgery, and the management of benign bone tumours and cysts. He is experienced in advanced procedures including internal hemipelvectomy, extended curettage, extracorporeal radiotherapy with reimplantation of bone tumours, cryosurgery for bone tumours, total femur replacement, en bloc resection of spinal sarcomas, and rotationplasty. He also performs surgical management of spinal tumours and uses computer navigation technology for precise tumour removal in anatomically complex areas.

Dr Tiwari completed his MBBS and MS in Orthopedics, followed by a Fellowship in Musculoskeletal Oncology at the Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute, Italy, and a Diploma in Tissue Banking. He has held senior positions including Senior Resident in Orthopedics at Lady Hardinge Medical College and Associated Hospitals, Head of the Orthopedic Oncology Unit at Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute, Delhi, and Senior Director of Musculoskeletal Oncology at Max Super Specialty Hospital, Saket.

He has a special interest in paediatric oncology and focuses on preserving limb function while ensuring appropriate oncologic outcomes. He has authored close to 40 papers and book chapters on orthopedic oncology, and serves as Deputy Editor of the Oncology Section of the Journal of Clinical Orthopedics and Trauma. He is an Executive Committee Member of the Indian Musculoskeletal Oncology Society, Chief Investigator of a multicentric osteosarcoma study sponsored by IMSOS, and Chairman of the Osteosarcoma Subcommittee of the Indian Paediatric Haemato-Oncology Group.
