Dr Ashok Rajgopal

Dr Ashok Rajgopal is Group Chairman of Orthopaedics at Medanta, Gurugram, and an orthopedic surgeon of international repute known for pioneering multiple firsts in joint replacement surgery in India. He performed the first bilateral total knee replacement surgery, the first minimally invasive joint replacement surgery, the first virtual total knee replacement using patient-specific instrumentation, and was the first surgeon in India to use gender-specific knee implants.

He has performed more than 39,000 total knee replacement surgeries and over 60,000 arthroscopic surgeries for sports injuries over his career. He was a member of the international design team behind the Persona knee system developed by Zimmer, and designed instruments for minimally invasive total knee replacement that are now used by surgeons worldwide.

Dr Rajgopal completed his MBBS at the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune, and his MS in Orthopaedics at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. He holds an MCh in Orthopaedics along with FRCS and FIMSA qualifications, and was awarded an Honorary FRCS by the Royal College of Surgeons in 2011.

His achievements have been recognised with several of India's highest civilian and medical honours, including the Padma Shri, awarded by the President of India in 2014, and the Dr B.C. Roy Award. He is a member of the Indian Orthopaedic Association.
