About Dr Shyam Bihari Bansal
Dr Shyam Bihari Bansal is Senior Director and Head of the Department of Nephrology, and Director of the Kidney Transplant programme, at Medanta – The Medicity, Gurugram. He has more than 28 years of experience in nephrology and kidney transplant medicine, with a distinguished career marked by significant contributions to the field.
He completed his MBBS at G.R. Medical College, his MD in Medicine at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College, and his DM in Nephrology at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), Lucknow, in 2005. He also holds an FRCP from the Royal College of Physicians, London.
Dr Bansal played a pivotal role in establishing the Department of Nephrology at Medical College, Gwalior, in 2006, before working as a Consultant at Fortis Hospital, Noida, and joining Medanta since its inception in 2009. At Medanta, he has helped build the department into one of India's leading centres for nephrology and kidney transplantation, and has been directly involved in the care of over 2,000 kidney transplant recipients.
His pioneering contributions include publishing the first case report of kidney transplantation in an HIV-positive patient in India (2009), introducing ABO-incompatible kidney transplants, and performing the first steroid-free kidney transplant in the country. His areas of expertise include critical care nephrology, kidney transplants, chronic and acute renal failure, and the management of older donor kidney transplants, treating both adults and children.
Dr Bansal coordinates the DNB teaching programme in nephrology and actively mentors the next generation of nephrologists. He serves as Honorary Secretary of the Indian Society of Nephrology and is a Life Member of the Indian Society of Organ Transplantation, a member of the European Society of Dialysis and Transplantation, and a member of the International Transplantation Society.
