Ostomy Creation in India

An ostomy creates an opening, called a stoma, on the abdominal wall through which stool passes into an external pouch, bypassing the affected section of bowel below. It is most often performed alongside bowel resection, following bowel injury, or for conditions like colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, or diverticulitis, either as a temporary measure to protect a new bowel join while it heals or as a permanent solution when the bowel cannot be safely reconnected.

Procedures Available

A colostomy diverts the large intestine (colon) to the abdominal wall, and can be created from different sections of the colon depending on where the disease or injury is located. An ileostomy diverts the small intestine (ileum) instead, typically used when the entire colon needs to be bypassed or removed. Both can be temporary, most commonly created as a loop stoma that is later reversed once healing is confirmed, or permanent, known as an end stoma, when reconnection isn't possible or advisable.

Cost

The estimate covers the surgery, anaesthesia, hospital stay, and initial stoma care education. When an ostomy is created alongside a larger procedure, such as bowel resection or cancer surgery, it is typically bundled into that surgery's overall cost rather than billed as a fully separate procedure. A later stoma reversal surgery, where planned, is a separate cost.

How Long the Trip Takes

Most patients plan for 12 to 14 days in India when the ostomy is a standalone procedure. This covers pre-op evaluation, 4 to 6 days in hospital after surgery, and enough time with a stoma care nurse to become confident managing the pouch before travelling home.

Choosing a Hospital

Choose a colorectal or gastrointestinal surgical team with a dedicated stoma care nurse or enterostomal therapist, since hands-on training in pouch care and stoma site selection significantly affects day-to-day comfort and confidence afterward. Ask what support is available for stoma supplies and questions once you return home.
