Pediatric ASD/VSD Repair in India

Atrial septal defect (ASD) and ventricular septal defect (VSD) are among the most common congenital heart defects, holes in the wall separating the heart's chambers that a child is born with. ASD affects the upper chambers, VSD the lower chambers. Small defects sometimes close on their own in early childhood, but defects that are large enough to affect the heart's workload need to be closed surgically to allow normal growth and prevent long-term strain on the heart and lungs.

Timing matters in children

Unlike many adult procedures, timing is a central part of pediatric ASD/VSD care. Large VSDs and related defects are often repaired within the first year of life, sometimes within the first six months, if they are affecting the baby's growth or breathing. ASDs are frequently repaired a little later, often around age 3 to 4, once the child is bigger and better suited to the procedure. Device closure vs surgical repair

Where the defect's size, position and surrounding tissue allow it, device closure is done through a catheter inserted in the groin, avoiding open-heart surgery entirely. When the defect is too large, in a difficult position, or the child is very young or small, surgical repair is done instead, closing the hole with a patch during open-heart surgery using a heart-lung bypass machine. Device closure means a shorter hospital stay and faster recovery, but not every defect is suitable for it.

Pediatric cardiac care differs from adult care in more than technique. Anaesthesia dosing, monitoring equipment, ICU protocols and even the size of catheters and devices are scaled specifically for children. A dedicated paediatric cardiac intensive care unit (PCICU), staffed by teams trained in children's post-operative recovery, is a standard part of the care pathway for this surgery.
