Together, these cause insufficient blood flow to the lungs and mixing of oxygen-poor and oxygen-rich blood, leading to low oxygen levels in the body and the bluish skin tone known as cyanosis.
Complete repair vs staged approach
Most infants undergo complete intracardiac repair in a single surgery, closing the ventricular septal defect with a patch and relieving the narrowing that restricts blood flow to the lungs, correcting the underlying problem in one operation. In some cases, particularly very young or smaller infants, or those with additional complicating anatomy, a staged approach is used instead. A palliative shunt, most often a Blalock-Taussig shunt, is placed first to improve oxygen levels and allow the baby to grow, with complete repair performed later once the infant is a better candidate for it.
When surgery is done
Timing depends on the severity of symptoms and the child's overall condition. Babies with significant cyanosis or breathing difficulty often need surgery within the first few months of life, while less symptomatic infants may have repair scheduled a little later, generally within the first one to two years. Life after repair
