Tonsillectomy in India

The tonsils are two small glands at the back of the throat that are part of the body's immune system. Tonsillectomy, the surgical removal of the tonsils, is most commonly recommended for recurrent or severe tonsil infections (tonsillitis), tonsils enlarged enough to cause obstructive sleep apnea or significant breathing and swallowing difficulty, or, less commonly, a peritonsillar abscess or suspicious tonsil tissue.

In children vs adults

In children, the most common reason for tonsillectomy today is obstructive sleep apnea caused by enlarged tonsils and adenoids, often performed together as an adenotonsillectomy, rather than recurrent infections alone. In adults, tonsillectomy is more often done for recurrent tonsillitis that hasn't improved with repeated antibiotic courses, or for tonsils causing breathing or swallowing problems. Recovery tends to be somewhat more uncomfortable and slower in adults than in children.

Surgical technique

Tonsils can be removed using traditional surgical instruments (cold steel), or with newer techniques such as electrocautery, coblation, or laser, which use heat or radiofrequency energy to remove tissue and control bleeding during surgery. The choice of technique can affect the exact recovery experience and cost slightly, and your surgeon will recommend the technique best suited to your case.

Why the recovery window matters

Unlike many minor surgeries, tonsillectomy carries a specific, well-known risk of delayed bleeding from the surgical site as scabs in the throat naturally separate during healing, with this risk being highest around days 5 to 10 after surgery, not immediately after. This is an important part of planning international travel around this procedure, since it affects how soon it's advisable to fly home.
