About Dr Subhash Gupta

Dr Subhash Gupta is Chairman of the Centre for Liver & Biliary Sciences at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, New Delhi, and is widely regarded as the pioneer of modern liver transplantation in the Indian subcontinent. With more than 40 years of experience in general surgery, hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgery and liver transplantation, he has performed over 3,500 liver transplant surgeries, making him one of the most experienced liver transplant surgeons in India.

He completed his MBBS and MS in General Surgery at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and went on to specialize in Surgical Gastroenterology in 1989, followed by further training in England.

Dr Gupta pioneered living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) in India, helping make the procedure more accessible and affordable. He is credited with performing the first auxiliary partial orthotopic liver transplant for a child with fulminant hepatic failure, and the first related living donor liver transplant for an HIV-positive patient with hepatitis B-induced liver failure. In March 2019, he performed the first liver transplant at King George Medical University in its 100-year history.

The Centre for Liver and Biliary Sciences at Max, under his leadership, is one of the largest liver transplant centres in the world, performing approximately 200 liver transplants annually along with a comparable number of complex HPB cases. Before joining Max Healthcare in January 2017, Dr Gupta founded and chaired the Centre for Liver and Biliary Sciences at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi, and was earlier involved in launching the liver transplant programme at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.

He has published more than 30 papers on various aspects of living donor liver transplantation in indexed journals, and has helped establish liver transplant centres in other countries. He has treated patients from across South Asia and Central Asia, including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan.
