Dr Sandeep Aggarwal

Prof. (Dr.) Sandeep Aggarwal is the Chairman of the Institute of Minimal Access, Bariatric, GI & Robotic Surgery at Manipal Hospital, Dwarka, New Delhi, and is a globally recognized leader in bariatric and minimal access surgery with more than 30 years of surgical experience.

He completed his MBBS and Masters in Surgery (MS) from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, followed by senior residency at the same institute. He went on to complete a one-year research fellowship at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, USA, and a four-month Commonwealth Fellowship in Bariatric Surgery at Homerton University, London, UK.

Dr. Aggarwal was a faculty member in the Department of Surgical Disciplines at AIIMS, New Delhi, from 1999 and served as Head of Surgery Unit II until June 2024. He is credited with pioneering bariatric surgery in India's public healthcare sector since 2008, establishing a dedicated Bariatric Clinic at AIIMS and helping launch a 2-year Bariatric Fellowship Program under the National Board of Examinations. He has also mentored public hospitals including AIIMS Bathinda, PGIMER Chandigarh, LNJP, and LHMC in setting up bariatric surgery programs.

He has performed more than 1,300 bariatric surgeries, over 400 renal transplants, and more than 10,000 laparoscopic surgical procedures, including complex GI surgeries, adrenalectomy, splenectomy, and hernia repairs. Dr. Aggarwal is an active researcher with over 140 publications and several book chapters, has delivered more than 200 invited lectures at national and international conferences, and serves as Editor of the Journal of Minimal Access Surgery (JMAS).
