Whipple Surgery in India

Whipple surgery, medically known as a pancreaticoduodenectomy, removes the head of the pancreas along with the duodenum (the first part of the small intestine), the gallbladder, and part of the bile duct, sometimes along with part of the stomach. It is one of the most complex operations in abdominal surgery, and is performed for a range of conditions affecting this cluster of organs, not only pancreatic cancer.

What it's used to treat

The most common reason for Whipple surgery is cancer in the head of the pancreas. It is also used for other cancers in the same region, including bile duct cancer (cholangiocarcinoma), ampullary cancer, and certain duodenal tumors, since these structures sit so close together that a tumor in any one of them can require the same operation to remove safely. Less commonly, it is used for non-cancerous conditions such as chronic pancreatitis causing severe symptoms, or certain benign tumors and cysts of the pancreas.

Open, laparoscopic, or robotic

Whipple surgery can be performed as open surgery, or, in suitable cases, using laparoscopic or robotic-assisted techniques through smaller incisions. The right approach depends on the tumor's size and location, and the surgeon's assessment of what is safest for that specific case; open surgery remains the most common approach given the complexity of the reconstruction involved.

Reconstructing the digestive tract

After removing the affected organs, the surgeon reconnects the remaining pancreas, bile duct, and stomach to the small intestine, so that digestion, bile flow, and pancreatic enzyme function can continue. This reconstruction is a major part of what makes the surgery technically demanding, and is why outcomes are closely tied to how experienced the surgical team and hospital are with this specific operation.
